(A)I: The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.

What if in 50 years artificial intelligence can ‘understand’ language? Could it be that in a few decades from now, we will have rap and spoken word battles between human and AI? Who will win, and why? How can technologies like AI shape the way we develop and use languages?

Wittgenstein once wrote: “the limits of my language mean the limits of my world” (Tractatus Logico-philosophicus, 5.6), but how are we to interpret this? Is it really possible that our language affects the way we perceive and think about the world? In modern linguistics ‘linguistic relativism”, the notion that language affects or shapes our experiences, is refuted to a great extent. We would like to invite you to engage together with us in a discussion about the influence of our language on the way we experience and think about the world. Is it possible that people who speak different languages see the world differently because of it?

During this meet-up philosopher Tilman Kartsten is going to dwell on the controversial subject of ‘linguistic relativism’ once more and explore to what extend it is in fact thinkable that language shapes our experience. Performance artist Cassandra Onck is going to use music generating AI to create a live rap performance that gives another perspective on the relation between AI, language and expression.

    Speakers:

Tilman Karsten is a master student in Medicine with a background, but mainly a great interest, in philosophy. In his daily life he is looking for a way to combine insides of both disciplines to help him get a better understanding of complicated and or unexplained medical phenomena.

Cassandra Onck is a Dutch singer, music-theatre maker and rapper. As #ONCK she creates thematic concerts that explore and share different perspectives on current societal questions. During her performances she connects music, technology, personal stories and science to challenge the audience to experience beyond their own perspective.

Cassandra currently also works as “citymaker” for festival Ruimtekoers and is one of the core developers of “Create Space”: a new minor programme for students from the Radboud University and ArtEZ university of the arts. Www.hasthagonck.nl
